cobra 200
ok got a new to me rig , that was a good price , but its not without its problems .
can anybody help/advice?
1,why do they fit a +10khz button if it don't do anything?
2,the night-watch front has stopped working, can i get replacement front?
3,fitted a power mic (base mic) i get feedback thro the speaker?
4,the whole display is very dim(dimmer control works fine),but looks like its on a low setting even when on full.
tx and rx are spot on even on ssb even tho its a cobra 200.

Re: cobra 200
Can't help with all of the problems but if I remember right the 10Khz switch only works when the radio is in it's normal 10m mode. When it's opened up to cover all of the frequencies it can cover the 10khz switch stops working as it's no longer required.
I'm not sure if I remember right it but I'm sure I saw somewhere that it will still get the alpha channels which it will show it's on by lighting one of the decimal points on the channel display.

Something along the lines of before 11m modification it would have worked but after modification the alphas are filled in so the button is no longer required.hagueok wrote: 1,why do they fit a +10khz button if it don't do anything?
No idea, But if you do be carful as its something like 120v and i have been bitten a few times forgetting to power off before unplugging it.2,the night-watch front has stopped working, can i get replacement front?
Must be wired wrong ?3,fitted a power mic (base mic) i get feedback thro the speaker?
Dunno sorry4,the whole display is very dim(dimmer control works fine),but looks like its on a low setting even when on full.

Re: cobra 200
The LED and EL/Nightwatch are both driven by the EL inverter board, if one or both are not right I'd be checking that board.
As Nick said, watch where your finger goes as there's around 120VAC there which could make you wake up rather quickly and possibly cause damage to the CPU.
*edit* And reading the datasheet for the HV driver chip, it's around 180VAC, not 120.

Re: cobra 200
so if the display and the night-watch are powered by the same device, this inverta...it could be that the night-watch is working fine , just a lack of power to make it work.
has anybody got a wiring schematic for it, or can tell me the pin outs?
i will look later see if there's anything like a dry joint.

Schematics are up on CB Tricks, if you google cobra200 gtl schematic it's one of the first hits. (I'm out and about at the moment or I'd add in a link)hagueok wrote:so if the display and the night-watch are powered by the same device, this inverta...it could be that the night-watch is working fine , just a lack of power to make it work.

Could still be a duff EL panel for the night watch, it might have damaged the inverter causing the dim LEDs but it's the obvious place to start looking look if both are acting up.

Re: cobra 200
also check i ton a frequeny counter,
i guarantee it's off frequency
they don't do zero's but the display shows it.
27.555 is not at 12 o'clock.
the 10kc is as above, because it's now modded..
display not bright because the bulb is wrong in the meter..
(it's not one i repaired for ebay is it )

Good move.
Cobra 200's seem to be a troublesome radio.
