Generally you will need to visit the club anyway to do the practical assessments, the social aspect is a big part of amateur radio. Most clubs are pretty flexible on when you can do the practicals and a lot of the theory is easy enough to self study. Get yourself a copy of Foundation License Now (ISBN: 978-1872309804), about a fiver, it covers everything the exam does. Your area has quite a few ARCs so ask around.

You can't just take the exam for the Foundation (or Intermediate) because of the practicals involved. One of them is a short QSO with someone else from the club on HF for example.

Take a look at http://www.g8srs.co.uk/ I know its an hour or so away but they do a Saturday & Sunday course all done over one weekend. They do no pressure you into joining the club or visiting in advanced, they just train you very well.

They have a course running in a few months I think.
