Right digging this back up as I think I have found a cure for tobacco smoke contaminated radios.

Recently I picked up a really tidy Maxcom super 4E, which hummed of cigar smoke.

The thing that I found which removes the smell was car brake cleaner spray. I removed the front panel and sprayed it over everything, all over the PCB, over the inside and outside of the cases including the speaker then left it to dry.

It now smells as good as new.

I didn't spray it on the front panel, as I didn't want to damage the plastic, and I didn't spray too much on the wax inside as it will dissolve it but the rest got a real good soaking.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Is it a solvent-based cleaner as I'd be worried it'd eat itself into things?

It doesn't seem to, I have sprayed it all over plastic and painted bits on the car before now without issues. It does evaporate really quickly so doesn't sit around too long.

I made sure to try it on a cheaper radio too to test it. :)
