Re: The Oldest Cobra 148 GTL DX ?
Bob
It's nice to see one that age in such good nick.
I had a Superstar 360 with no FM and the crystals on a separate board. I can't remember the main board number but it did have the MB8719 PLL so I expect it was a widened out US Grant/Madison board.
This was around 8-10 years ago and I sold it locally after a year or so but it always sticks in my mind because of it's superb condition and the fact I have never seen another, it always confused people because it looked identical to every other 360 except no FM.
Any way yours looks a pretty 148 either way, and I have always thought the 879 to be a nice chassis.

Re: The Oldest Cobra 148 GTL DX ?
Thanks 'BlueDuck' - I had no real intention of buying another 148 (I've had a few) but when this one was offered to me, I couldn't really let it pass. I recently had my interest in Mk1's re-kindled when Paul (Ashtec) kindly lent me one to 'have a play with' - and found myself enjoying it. When this super tidy one came up for sale... it was a case of 'hell yeah!' .
The purists can rest assured - there will be no 'modding' or fitting 'Colonel Bogey' bleeps in this one
It's lasted so many years un-molested, it would be a crime to commit that kind of sacrilege.

Beautifull mk1 you got there bob, Id definatly keep it un-molested the MK1 is definatly better this way as they do take more work to modify than the mk2.
But they work just as well, all be it a little lazy on the needle with some.

Ain't that the case ! On some FM copies it barely moves. Seems happier on SSB.PoisoN wrote: all be it a little lazy on the needle with some.

Personally not a problem with me , always happy to learn more about the good old 148 makes you wonder just how many 148's /360's are left in circulation ? what we talking hundreds or thousands ? just wonder if most have been unearthed by now or there are still many more laying around in garages and lofts ?!mof000 wrote:Yayyyy, old thread resurrection!!

It was just a general statement! I wasn't knocking the Q&A . I must admit i'm not up to speed with serial numbers so learnt something also!gmham wrote:Personally not a problem with me , always happy to learn more about the good old 148 makes you wonder just how many 148's /360's are left in circulation ? what we talking hundreds or thousands ? just wonder if most have been unearthed by now or there are still many more laying around in garages and lofts ?!mof000 wrote:Yayyyy, old thread resurrection!!

Re: The Oldest Cobra 148 GTL DX ?
The Cobra 148 GTL-DX is not as common these days as the Superstar 360FM. The 148's do crop up quite often, but not in as many numbers as the 360. Also, it's easier to find a mint 360 than it is a mint 148.gmham wrote:Personally not a problem with me , always happy to learn more about the good old 148 makes you wonder just how many 148's /360's are left in circulation ? what we talking hundreds or thousands ? just wonder if most have been unearthed by now or there are still many more laying around in garages and lofts ?!mof000 wrote:Yayyyy, old thread resurrection!!
This is possibly due to the 148 GTL-DX only being manufactured for a few years in the late 70's/80's? Whereas the 360FM was manufactured from the late 70's well into the 1990's.
Without a doubt, there are still hidden gems laying around in garages, sheds, lofts etc. But we all dream of a batch of NOS 148's being discovered like the Uniden 100's of 2015 and the Telsat homebase's of a few years back.

Re: The Oldest Cobra 148 GTL DX ?
Does the serial number begin with 03 or 13? If it begins with 13 it's actually a very late MK1.kevbleicester wrote: hi, I have a lower mk 1 ends in 59

People say that the Mk1 isn't as good as the Mk2. I disagree, I think they are both equally as good when set up correctly.
