KENWOOD TS50 Wont PWR UP.

Post by 26 GC 104 »

Hi. Can some one help me please?. I went to turn on my trusty old TS50 Today and nothing totally dead. Strange as she was fine yesterday. I have checked the obvious in line fuses and protection diode and the PSU and all is OK. anyone out there have any ideas where to look next. Thanks Rob

You could try a microprocessor reset, as described in the instruction manual.

Thanks Otter for the reply. I have tried both partial and full microprocessor reset but still dead. Thanks Rob.

Stupid long shot from a radio numpty, but I had a Yaesu FT102 a long time ago and it seemed to die overnight, it turned out to be an iddy biddy button stuck in on the facia.

Is there an internal fuse on these ? Possible too its suffering the same problems the Icom 706 has with leaky caps corroding tracks, The Icom 706 is notorious for it, Kenwoods are prone too it as well, Only a few weeks ago my TS-450 lost audio due to a leaky cap corroding a track which was the +ve to the audio amp....Just plucking at straws here.

Thanks Guys. I have had a look at the on/off switch but seems ok. Nick there is an internal fuse and is ok as for the caps i can see no obvious leakage or damage to the tracks. Thanks Rob. :?

I have never held a ts-50 in my hands let alone opened one So trying to help is difficult, Going to sound stupid here, But have you tried the obvious by checking voltages, Check that that there is voltage getting to the radio by unplugging the power lead and sticking positive and negative probes of a voltmeter into the socket end and see if theres anything there...The amount of times i have seen the fuse holder on a powerlead melted slightly inside so the fuse dosnt make contact...Again just a thought.

I own two of them, but I hate radios where schematics are spread over seven pages.

What are the voltages on the three pins of IC6 on the digital unit? There should be 13.8V, 5V and 0V whether it's switched on or off.

Does that set have a lamp fuse? Or am I a bit out of touch?

I may be wrong but i believe it was only Yaesu's that had lamp fuses.

I am still on the fence with a corroded track somewhere or maybe a voltage regulator down, If all fuses are intact and voltage is getting to the radio, Have you checked for Positive voltage on both sides of the ON/OFF switch ?

Hi Otter. I have tested the voltage on the ic6 digatal unit. The results were from the left were pin1 5.1v pin2 0.3v pin3 13v. Nick i am going to try voltage @ the on/off switch. Thanks every one for your help and advice. Thanks Rob :?
