Now I'm puzzled!!!

Post by mintcake_man »

Hi all,

As an avid listener here in Kendal, with my trusty Yaesu VX-2E (yes I am Ham also) I entered the freq 453.100 to store ready for my arrival in Maryport at the weekend, but I have been listening to the following.

The words MPS Control is heard, asking for the following numbers and locations they give.

MPS 1 - Corridor
MPS 4 - Stairwell
MPS 5 - Down Escalator
MPS 6 - Lobby
MPS 6 - Corridor

The control sounding guy, starts to shout when no answer from his calls.

I know that the local shopping centre (Westmorland) use 456.950 I've listened to that on many occasions, and the nearest places to my location is ASDA, Homebase, Westmorland & General Hospital.

Any idea's what I'm hearing?

Regards

Greetings Mintcake_Man

It seem highly likely you are listening to shopwatch, or if the transmissions are after shop hours, Pubwatch (which often use the same frequencies).

They obviously can't give out area names, or names of shops. So, they are given out in code, like "Alpha One" and so forth. If they are talking about certain "Wards", or "Wings", it could be the hospital you mention.

How I know this was because my GF was the custodian of the shop radio.

This is my 10p's worth anyway...

This reminds me of an unidentified transmission that is between 450-453mhz NFM in my area

I often hear something along the lines of "Base to Alpha One over" and the other half of the conversation would go to "Alpha One to base, signal fine over". And it would go onto "Bravo", "Charlie", etc. Eventually, it cycled through something like 25 different users.

The transmission is like a periodic radio check, for some odd reason. But once, I did catch the same transmission on the frequencies describing a "Disturbance on C Ward".

Now, in my case it is either Ormskirk Hospital security, or it's Ashworth Hospital. The home of a certain Mr Ian Brady.

Cheers for that.

This explains a helluva lot too regarding the transmissions heard on that frequency. And the healthy signal strength too, as that is worryingly close to my location!
