headset

Post by Rizzini ABC123 »

Hi everyone, could anyone recommend a really good reliable headset for receive only as I prefer to use the transceivers mic for transmit, but struggle with the receive audio on the built in mic in the transceiver and also have a lot of outdoor noise near the shack from neighbours, petrol lawn mowers, dogs ,etc
any recommendations from people who use headsets especially with the ftdx1200 would be very welcome, I know hell are supposed to be very good do they do on for receive only as to pay £250.00 for headset, adapter cable, and ptt seems a bit unnecessary for what I need !

Just use headphones if only for listening.

Plenty of vids on YouTube about headphone use on ham radio, go have a watch to get a better idea of your needs.

Just buy headphones you feel comfortable with.
I use AKG K550. 48 hours contest is no biggie with those.

Don't I know it. 30 years of working in very noisy server data centres effectively killed my hearing. Until the health and safety dudes got in on the act, you didn't bother with any kind of ear protection. Nowadays you can't work in these places without ear defenders, and even then there's a maximum time period.

Slightly OT, but hearing is so precious, it needs to be looked after.

Absolutely. I speak from experience as l was affected by tinnitus for a short time years back caused by loud music from instrument amps (was in a band when l was younger and went to concerts) and listening to music for long periods with headphones. Was lucky it was only temporary and a specialist warned that I was lucky and not to repeat such again otherwise bad permanent damage would be the result.

Easy to take things for granted and not think about the consequences of until it's too late.
