Not quite correct.

Modern radios with electret elements use a voltage sent up the microphone wire from the radio to power the microphone element as they work by varying capacitance. If you stick a normal mic dynamic or aftermarket power mic straight on you can damage both the mic and radio as the mic will get voltage from the radio.

On some new radios you can wire alternative mics by disconnecting the power wire inside the mic plug, but on others you may not be able to do this.

I know that on the majority of President radios and Anyclone types they will work with an alternative mic if the volateg pin is disconnected, but the Presidents in particular never seem to sound all that great.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

This guy is using the stock microphone on his President Lincoln to which has been modified for wider frequency response. I suspect changing the microphone would probably not be beneficial in his particular case.
