A tale of two antenna’s

Post by DX Duster »

Hi guys I currently run a president hymalya wide band but also have a sirio gainmaster to possibly put it in place of the hymalya has anyone on here had experience of both of these as I’m not sure 🤔 If it’s a bit of a fruitless task if my receive and transmit isn’t much different from how it is at the moment

The old aluminium versus fibreglass thread didn’t mean to start a debate just interested in if their is a noticeable difference in performance as one 18ft an other is 24ft but would be mounted in the same place

Thanks for the reply’s guys it’s appreciated

Himalaya is well known for it's poor performance, Gainmaster could be better by 0.63dB :)

Decent aluminium antenna have radiating element close to 5/8 length and it is electrically extended to 3/4. It gives best elevation.
Sirio 2008 or 2016 for example.
Personally I use Sirtel Super 12 bought in early 90's.
I had fiber glass antennas for some time, on antenna switch, but no more. They were deaf and couldn't handle my transmit power.
Last Imax I returned to shop after 2 days. They claim 5000W, died at much less power xD

If you want good performance, narrow bandwidth antenna is the best.
1. It have best gain nearby it's resonance frequency.
2. I takes less out of the band noise because of narrow bw.
Wideband antennas like Gainmaster and similar perform poor because of their widebandness.

Can I remind members that common decency should prevail while on the boards.

Using the term 'Gainmaster' is a homophobic slur which I'll not tolerate. Any further use of the term or similar ones will be met with sanctions, without warning.....

Maybe it would have been funny back in the 80s, but I'd like to think society had moved on.

The gain difference between the two antennas may not reflect the real world difference.

The GM could be 2 or 3 s-points better depending on location and the installation.

every 'real world' installation is unique and results are subjective. One man's fishing rod is another man's DX Magic wand!

All I'd say to the op is 'suck it and see'. Swap them and see which one YOU prefer and which one you think works better for YOU. Opinions are like assholes.... everybody has one. Most forums too

If you're within groundwave range of an online receiver...

You can get a more "scientific" result. Antenna testing can be very misleading!
