superstar 360fm eprom fitting?

Post by dipstick »

Hi all

I have a superstar 360FM in original condition and not messed with, I would like to add UK-40 to it but not via disabling the C9 switch or NB-ANL switch, I would like a 6 band switch to Do what it says, CW FM AM USB LSB then UK-fm on position 6.

I have emailed nick black spirit via transmission 1 and hopefully he will reply, he did a president Jackson for me some years ago which unfortunately was pinched from my van.

The thing is I dont know if nick reads the mails from here and I cant PM him as yet not enough posts. also is eprom still the best way to get UK-40 or have things moved on from them? I would also like any upgrades or improved parts fitted at the same time as well as a full alignment ect ect. will it need new caps after 30 years?

so any and all advice welcome guys. I dont need low low's or high high's just UK-40

cheers!

I'm sure Nick will get back to you . He reads both emails and PMs .I can tell you now that putting the UK FM on the mode switch will be a pain in the a$$ to do . In fact you might need a new 3 pole switch . It'll be a lot easier putting it on the existing band switch , and converting it to a 4 way. If you're planning on using the radio frequently then I'd recap it . It won't do any harm , and you might fix a few "soon to appear" faults .

Hi Sammy

Thanks for the reply, and putting the uk-40 on the last position of the band switch is a very good solution. as I would like to keep the switches doing what they say on the front. and yes after some 30 years a full re cap I thought would be a good idea to save against any future issues. Also if there are any stability and RX and TX upgrades I would also go with that. this 360 is in very good condition and hasn't been messed with inside, which is good so nick can start with a clean slate in that regard.

Is the eprom for uk 40 the best way to go or are there any better options around these days?

Hi Matt.

An Eprom is a tried and trusted method of adding extra bands. These days, however, a lot of people favour using a PIC which provides the same results.
Never, ever, ever....bloody anything ever!

Far too many radio's to list here. But I do own a legal one...

Thanks for the info, Whats the most reliable method? I remember eproms loseing there programing after a while, perhaps the PIC method might be better?

To be honest I don't think it makes much difference. I use "Nick's pics" (patent pending 😀) for most of my HI band mods. I presume he uses a pic for the uk fm as well. You can also add the +10khz and make the beep switchable. Maybe add a frequency counter. There's not much else needed on these radios.

thanks Sammy

Think I will go with one of 'Nicks pics' then and anything he feels might be an upgrade, new caps and alignment then. the beep can stay, always liked the cobra bleep, and 10khz shift iam not bothered about really, there are plenty of free channels these days. and frequency counter I have in my racal dana if I want to check it.

thanks for all the help.

just waiting for nick to reply now.

If it's still in the Outbox then it just means that he hasn't read it yet. I'll pm you with his email address.
