Re: Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
Bump!
Well its been a while, and there hasn't been much of a responce. On the one hand we have people who won't admit they use tetra, on the other hand we have trolls asking for TEA keys. Strange.
Well I'm in well too deep to quit now!
1 x Cleartone CM9000 10w + DMO repeat in the car.
1 x Motorola MTM800E 3w in the flat as a node radio (ROIP).
2 x Motorola MTM700's 3w in the flat as experimental sets.
1 x Motorola MTH800 (soon to be used as mobile node radio)
2 x Sepura SRH3800 TW's
1 x Sepura SRP2000 TZ
1 x Motorola MTH300 (old and heavy but works just as well as the sepura's!)
God know how many Simoco SRM1000's.
Maybe I should see someone about about my strange addiction?

....bit of a fettish??..
Some of the kit below, i also have a mobile repeater in the car to help the handheld range.
.....SShhhh... dont ever mention the T word near some of the old timers... they need to huddle round old valve sets to get a heat... lol .. only joking ..,
i also think it is also down to there being a limited amount of kit for sale at good prices,, a pair of tetra handhelds in dmo are as good as a pair of hyamotoshito chinese 446mhz radios for performance, its not until you use a repeater or at least a decent base set with good antenna do you get usable performance, ... at a high cost! £££

and with analogue FM, if you use "a repeater or at least a decent base set with good antenna" you also get usable performance ... at a lower cost!

Re: Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
"and with analogue FM you also get usable performance"
I currently get about 4 miles coverage from my handhelds to base in MS to MS calls.
I get about 30 miles range from mobile to base in MS to MS calls.
This implies around 34 miles with handheld through mobile RPT to base.
Tell me, how many GM380's are there owned by privateers that have around 34 miles range?
Have you ever USED tetra?

But there are so many variables that's meaningless - sorry
Have you compared with FM from the same locations, close-by band, same power, same antennas?

Re: Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
No there aren't. I have lived in the same place for over 20 years, and travel to pretty much the same places all the time.
If I gained or lost 20 metres range, I'd KNOW about it.
Tetra so far reaches 7 miles further than analogue with the same output power and the same antenna at the same frequency.

Re: Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
That's awesome, but I bet the total cost of all that kit is a few thousand £'s...not all of us have that sort of money to throw at a hobby!mr_h4ck3rm4n wrote:....bit of a fettish??..

That said I would LOVE some TETRA kit, if I could afford it I would go all digital with a CM9000 in the car running DMO repeat and MTH800's on our person...however I have seen the MTH800 handsets alone going on ebay for £500 a pop

Re: Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
mth800 on ebay dont fetch anywhere near £500 a pop unless it is brand new, you can pick them up 2nd hand between £200 and £280ish depending on what it is being sold with.
the best thing with tetra and digital in general is the audio is clear with no white noise etc, also joe blogs down the road with the scanner cant earwig on you

Re: Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
I second Scotty!
Anyone paying more than £250 for a second hand 1w radio, regardless of the standard of operation, needs their head examining.
The only radio I have paid silly money for, is a Cleartone CM9000. The reason was, that it was direct from the manufacturer, so brand new.

Re: Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
Yes the one I saw for £500 was brand new! How much did the CM9000 set you back just out of interest? I wouldn't bother going TETRA unless I had one.

Still a little meaningless without knowing what the terrain is like - sorryTRON wrote:No there aren't. I have lived in the same place for over 20 years, and travel to pretty much the same places all the time.

Tetra so far reaches 7 miles further than analogue with the same output power and the same antenna at the same frequency.
An extra 7 miles over flat ground is a lot easier than over wooded hills. What would be useful to know is how much extra FM power you'd need to run (each end) to match TETRA.

This thread is getting hijacked. The title of the thread is:
Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
There is plenty of room for other threads discussing range / cost / programming. Please PLEASE stick to the subject guys!
All I'm trying to do is get other users or Tetra to surface. A common Knowledge base would be beneficial to all.

Re: Tetra. Is anyone else using it?
I have a friend who has been into tetra for many years.
I like the radios, What they can do and they do have their purposes however the EMF side of it puts me off, Even the public sector causes interference everywhere.
I'm looking at a pair of them now right in front of me, DMO they don't have a great use for me in my current QTH.
If I had a close friend who lived near they would be an excellent solution for completely private communications.
Yes it would be easy to throw up an antenna and run a base station but my conscience could not handle the amount of EMF I would cause.
Yes VOIP they have their uses but I'd rather play with analogue UHF with heavy encryption!
