Intek MT-5050 softkey mods (Power reduction) 8ch only etc

Post by Celebritypaul »

Noticed that a few folk out there are so happy with these radios that they go out and buy another and sometimes three. One of the reasons for this is that they want one modded in the usual way,(three wire snip) ,and they want the other left so they can just monitor 8ch pmr and have low power etc.
Well....
8)
what you do is this...
Mod the radio..
when switching on the radio hold down (BOTH ARROW KEYS).This puts the radio in low power mode (0.1w).
When switching on the radio hold down (MON & DOWN KEYS). This puts the radio in 8ch 446 mode (This way theres No need to programme all your memory channels up with these 8 ch in order just to scan them only).

When switching on the radio hold down ( SCAN / UP / Down KEYS). This puts the radio into 69ch LPD only at 0.1w only.

When switching on radio hold down (SCAN / DOWN ARROW / MENU). This puts the radio into 69ch LPD only with full power 4/5w

when switching on the radio hold down (SCAN / MON ) this puts the radio into 99CH + all 446 hi and low + duplex frequencies on full power 4/5w

when switching on the radio hold down (SCAN / MON / DOWN ) this puts the radio into 69ch + 446 X 8ch at full power 4/5w.

And a little note:
The ringer button on this set cant be deactivated. So....
If you dont want the ringer accidentally triggering al the time because the button is rather sensitive....
what you do is remove the back cover and keypad ,and place a small peice of clear tape over the circuit board only where this button connects on the board. This will deactivate the button saving the very, very long embarrassing ringer going off if you just catch the button by accident.

All the best guys :D

Glad you found this useful guys.
Think I've covered most of the pitfalls regarding the scanning of just the 8 ch 446 etc. Saving all that filling up valuable memory space etc.And when you see fit you can bang the power right down at will for proper legal transmitting when required.Ive found this useful on my 446 gateway. This way I can run my MT-5050 on super low power when I like and make the batts last out for ages.

So...
No need to go out and buy other sets so you can operate differently either

I do love a curly Wurly too

Hello together, and first of all greetings from a newbie (just on this board, not in PMR). After one week collecting information about the Intek MT-5050 i am sure, this is, what i want. And now the information, i can mod it even just with using the soft keys. Brilliant! But i have one more question to all, who modificated the MT-5050 by cutting the bridges inside: did anybody try to use the soft key modification AFTER cutting the bridges??? What effect it has, when the bridges are cutted?

Sorry for my bad english, i am from Germany

Best regards

Hi, and welcome to the board, yes the info above IS on a modified Intek 5050 that means it HAS had the links cut, i am not sure any of that will work if the radio has not been modified.

if you look at the first post it says

"what you do is this...
Mod the radio.."

What it means by Mod is Modify (in English we often shorten words), so this IS for a MODIFIED radio (hope you understand) ( i would not if it was in German).

Hello Bogget,
thank you for the welcome and the quick answer. I understand, what you mean. The problem was my reading, i saw this description, and i just translated the soft key combination, and what effect it has. That the autor wrote "Mod the radio..", i didn't realized, my focus was only on the keys. Its always tricky, to translate technical things, but now i know, that i should better read all, not only that, what makes me happy 8)

How do you get 5W from this? Cutting the links in the back only takes it to 4W I think. :)

After modding, is it possible to toggle the transmit power of the radio? If so, how?

Yes once you cut the links it adds an extra option, just press the menu key until the flashing "Hi" comes up then change it to "Lo" with the arrow keys.
