President George off frequency.

Post by Mudslinger »

I purchased a President George in near mint condition the other day for the extortionate sum of £20

It seems to work ok, but is off frequency by about 1KC in all modes. Also the clarifier seems to adjust the TX as well as RX which I am led to believe is fairly unusual.

It does look standard and unmessed with inside apart from the typical messy President ASC fitment.

Is the George easy enough to fix by a decent radio tech, or does the surface mount/microprocessor technology make it a bit tricky/impossible?

Yes it did come with its original mic as well. :D

Cheers. :)

Thanks mate. I don't havr the kit to do it myself, but it looks possible to do for someone in the know.

I am also wondering why it has gone off frequency in the first place.

There's a TX frequency preset inside the radio, possibly someone's been in and adjusted a few without knowing what does what. That's if it's only off frequency on TX though.

There are individual tuning cans for FM/AM, USB and LSB. Carefully adjusting these will set the radio back on frequency.

I think it is off on both.

I bet someone has been in and tried turning the power up, as it was in PR27 Mode when I bought and which would have limited it to 4 watts.

I have managed to put it into export mode, and I think it is now putting out around 30 watts. Also the RF meter doesn't move when you transmit on SSB.

Other than that a bargain for £20

I would restore the clarifier back to RX only and then an alignment.

Cheers Nick, if you are happy to do it I will send it your way after chrimbo with a couple of others.

I am pretty sure the Clarifier was like it is from the factory. I cant see any signs of messing in there. The radio was also locked to PR27 cept mode, which I would though was quite uncommon considering they are easy to unlock.

I bought my George new from Knights back in 2001. The clarifier was unlocked when I bought it and has always sat bang on 12 O'clock.

Nick will sort it out and make it an excellent radio. I have a few here myself which I'll be sending down to him when it's convenient for him.

I have had another look at it again today. It has certainly been screwdrivered a bit. AM power was at about 30 watts, so there was no room for any power increase for modulation.

I set it back to 7 watts and when audio is applied now it rises to around 25 watts. FM I set 7 watts also.
It still needs to go to Nick though as its off frequency and I think it is deaf as well. None of the cores look broken so wheover did it used a proper trimmer tool.

The mic socket wobbles a bit as well.

At least the problem isn't unique.

For the mic socket it looks like there isn't much you can do to stop it wobbling, other than using some structural epoxy on it.

It turns out it isn't deaf after all, I had the RF gain in the wrong place. Those knobs are hard to see...

It picks up better on SSB that all of my other radios.
Just need to get it over to Nick so that he can setup the frequency issue, as I needed the clarifier right around to hear people.
