Best antenna for a 1W handheld! Please advise

Post by WeatherWatcher »

Need help deciding what to get.
Frequency in use will be 144.800, needs SMA male connector and not going to poke my eye out when Pedestrian Portable.
Have a mini mag for the car but need something for when away from vehicle.
Looked at 771, 701, etc and dont want a telescopic.
Radio is an APRS tracker 0.5W or 1W tx.

The sheath of bicycle brake cable is nice material. About the size of RG58, easy to fasten into suitable connector. The metal spiral is solderable, but a wet rag is needed to not melt the black jacket. For 2m, mine ended up at about 30cm long. The spiral turns don't touch each other, thus so much shorter than the typical 19inch.

As a bonus, some laughter whever someone notices the antenna model, Shimano.

Don't know if it fits your bill, only this one samplepoint, no tests other than "seems to work like a handheld antenna", ...
