Does this sound right?

Post by BK »

I recently got round to telling ofcom that I've moved house (to Scotland) so was expecting the G on my licence to become GM, but instead they've issued two licences (with different licence numbers), one for the old address and one for the new address, and they're both still G. Is this how it's supposed to work?

Yeah, the licence has the call without the regional identifier as that can change depending on where you operate.

If you use their web tool to search for an available callsign when applying for a licence, you will also find that it does not find anything if a regional identifier is specified.

Makes sense if you think about it, otherwise you might be XyZZZ and somebody else might be XMyZZZ and all hell would break loose if one of you popped over to the others house for a cuppa and a spot of radio!

Doesnt make any sense to me, why issue another license at all - just because he has moved he should be able to keep his existing license.

OK, so having no RSL on the licence makes sense, having two different licences for the same callsign doesn't!

It's not the only odd thing that happened, when we moved over to electronic licences they changed the first issue date so it no longer matches the callsign, and recently they sent me a licence (which I will cherish) that had an 'E' RSL.

Two licences sounds like a admin error. The identifier is added by you, not Ofcom.

You also missed the part, about learning to spell, when you were at school.

Have a read of OFCOM and learn how to spell.

My three licenses all have the W prefix for Wales.
MW6
2W0
MW0

so yes it is rather strange that yours dont have the Scottish prefix on yours.

Had the M6s been out long when you got yours, RedDragon?

I think they were just out when I got my M3 and none of my licenses have the regional identifier shown. There's a few people I can think of that went through the tiers at the same as me and all are the same...

There's no saying they couldn't have done different things at different times though... in fact, we know they have!

All my licenses have been revalidated recently. But I passed foundation Oct 2012, intermediate Jan 2014, advanced march 2015.
When the license changes came into force this year they sent me my intermediate license as 2E0, even though I never given an English postcode haha.
Now they have all been updated and validated they all have the W prefix stated on all three licenses.

Ah right, I get you...

My 2M0 said 2E0 when it was issued. Forget the year now but it was ages ago. Ofcom advised at the time that this was how it worked and it was up to me to use the correct regional identifier, depending on where I operated.

Your licence should have the correct RSL, W, M, etc. When you check your details online there is a drop down at the bottom of the page to select your region. When operating /MM or reciprocally you must use what is printed on your licence!!
