Re: US amateur radio license
So its just like it used to be here, where every full licenced G simply walked in off the street one day out of curiosity/boredom and took the test with zero training or revision and passed first go?

Re: US amateur radio license
The US exams are held at 1pm on Sunday 11th October at the RSGB Convention according to the September RadCom. It says you can just turn up, but recommends advanced booking as there are limited papers.
See page 46 of RadCom for the person to e-mail - don't want to post his personal e-mail here. If anyone isn't an RSGB member, PM me and I can let you know the address.

Hi Mark,Mercunium wrote:Hi Scott,RedDragon wrote:Are you aiming to sit both the technician and general exams there on same day? Is there any practical elements like there is for the UK procedure?
I think i shall buy the same books you have bought and get reading.
I just need to find how im going to get round the issue of not having US postal address.
From the reading I've done, there is no practical at any level. The ARRL books I've got tell you a fair amount about the exams and the ARRL website has a list of "things to bring" (http://www.arrl.org/what-to-bring-to-an-exam-session). In the US, you can just turn up to an exam session unannounced as they are all listed on the website so I would imagine you need to do very little before the exam. They are the same sort of style exams as the UK version except the question pool is public. Pass mark is 75%.
Yes, I was planning on doing both exams on the same day, but will be guided by however they are doing it. Hopefully see you there then!
Mark.
I now have a US postal address to use, waheyyyy
can you send me the link to those books you bought off amazon?
I know it is cutting it a bit fine but I will have to put down the bottles of stella and revise my head off next few weeks.

Re: US amateur radio license
Scott,
I sent the links in the PM, but for anyone else who visits here looking for the books, here are the links:
Links from Amazon.co.uk - go here for Kindle versions, and it's worth looking in case they have any physical copies in the UK too.
Technician Class License Manual: http://amzn.to/1Q7ld3L
General Class License Manual: http://amzn.to/1LJNig9
Extra Class License Manual: http://amzn.to/1FiiyOh
Links from Amazon.com - check here for cheaper books but higher delivery costs. Most likely will still be cheaper for physical books than Amazon.co.uk.
Technician Class License Manual: http://amzn.to/1JwRcG5
General Class License Manual: http://amzn.to/1LJORe2
Extra Class License Manual: http://amzn.to/1LJP00U

Re: US amateur radio license
I agree with the suggestion above about taking the practice tests on QRZ.
You get to work with the actual question pool used in the test itself.
If you familiarize yourself with the US frequency limits and such, you probably have enough knowledge already to whiz through tech and general, and possibly the extra as well.
Best of luck.

Re: US amateur radio license
You're allowed to see the full question bank for the US exams. A friend of mine who was GW1VTJ moved stateside and took his Technician with his then YL. They had 30 mins with a copy of all available 99 questions and answers, there were 66 questions in the test and the pass mark was 35!! As an ARRL member I was thinking of registering as a VETO do UK based exams.
