Hi
I'm new, don't have my licence yet, although I hope that tomorrow will be the day I pass my Foundation exam and can then make a start.
I already own a Yaesu FT-840, Yaesu FRG-7, Yaesu FRG-7700 and a Yeasu FRT-7700.....so it is clear that I should be contacting Yaesu buyers annonimous
I try to build as much of my own stuff as I can simply because I (a) enjoy the challenge and (b) enjoy that feeling when I get it right.
Just built a Z Match ATU which works beautifully with my 20mtr dipole.
Thanks for letting me play

All great radios. I use a 840 occasionally too.
Well done on the Z match, presume your dipole is a balanced affair fed with ladder line

Welcome to Amateur Radio and the T1 forum. Remember, you can never have too many radios. If my wife ever exclaims 'what, another one?' I point at the pile of shoes and handbags in the wardrobe.
I got my licence in 1984 and I could start banging on about how busy the bands were back then, but I won't. Good luck and remember it's just a hobby.

ALC is something that kicks in and prevents you overdriving the PA stage, which would create distortion and eventual damage.
It will kick in when the mic gain and or combined with compression is too high.
Just watch the needle, its OK for it to move a bit, but not beyond the limit marked on the meter.

Welcome to the forum. There are quite a few avid self-builders amongst us and there are a lkot of info on the forum for previous projects etc. I am sure you can make use of he search function and follow in their footsteps for the more interesting ones, as well as adding your own stories.
