Hey guys need a little help if possible

Post by M4rc »

I bought a baofeng uv-5r the other day, i also bought a whip style antenna for better coverage. I'm in the cardiff area in a block of flats so pretty high up but i can't seem to pick up anything on my baofeng radio. I put a few frequencies in but i think they might be outdated ones.

Has anyone got any updated frequencies for the cardiff area please

Thanks

 Make sure that the display doesn't have 'CT' or 'DCS' icons activated otherwise the sel-call will be squelching everything out. Don't ask me how to alter the settings - don't have the manual to hand.. HTH!

What is the Whip style antenna? Does it have a model number? like Nagoya NA-771 144/430MHz
The antenna sockets on the UV5R have a male pin that goes into the female socket on the antenna.
Check that the socket on the radio has not had its pin broken off. quite a regular occurrence in the past apparently.

Finally if all looks good when you are receiving a signal you should have an smeter reading Top left on display.

If you are not hearing anything you may have CTCSS tone set for receive on that freq.
You can bypass it temporary by pressing and holding the MON button which is below the ptt button on the left hand side.
Ok open squelch is noisy but you may hear something.

Hope that helps.
Cheers :D
