Is 'Close Call' on my Uniden 3500 faulty?

Post by Ninjapower »

Hi all,

Tearing my hair out with this one...

I have a 3500XLT which I have lightly used for a few years now, and it has always appeared to work great. I mostly use it for listening to the local airport, and at weekends I use it to receive PMR446 and other UHF handheld radio at a shoot that I work at.

So I know it receives well and scans as it should, but I cannot seem to get a single flicker of life out of the Close Call facility, which is annoying as I need it for something.

The shoot management have acquired a bunch of new Mitex radios for the guys in charge to use, and I need to find out what the frequency they use is so I can add it to my scanner so that I can listen to their comms as well during the day. The Mitex radios look like your standard 5 watt UHF or VHF 'Business' radios with no display and just a knob on top to select from one of 16 channels or so.

No problem I thought, I just switched on Close Call on the 3500 and got absolutely nothing...

I was anywhere from 5 metres to 100 metres away from the guys using the radios and close call picked up nothing. I checked all the settings, set it to Close Call Priority, and didn't get a thing.

The scanner was picking up the guys using PMR446 a mile or so away, but wouldn't respond to the Mitex radios only a few metres away.

I tried close call again tonight by keying up a 5 watt handheld on UHF and VHF nearby my 3500, and again not a flicker.

What's going on?

Any ideas?

I am sure on the Uniden ubc72xlt you used to be able to switch what bands you wanted close call to work with but you say you have everything switched on regards this ? poss try a soft reset ?

I test my CC at the local airport as it works by signal strength and not distance, I can pick up a aircraft on it at just short of one mile away (depending on conditions) with a Watson Supergainer. Mitex do PMR446 handys are you sure it is not them you are picking up already? Other than that they will be on a UK Simple light frequency. Find them here with the tones
