Not sure if the firmware has changed dramatically since June last year, but you can indeed reprogram most digital options from the front panel on the MD-380 now, the catch-22 is that you need a programming cable and software to enable the front screen programming option.
You still cannot actually change the contact from FPP. Both the transmit contact and the RX group list can only be changed in the programming software at the moment, so that makes the radio as good as useless if you want to set up an entirely new digital channel, unless you already knew the group number you would be transmitting on and the groups you would want to receive ahead of time. However if you were using the hacked firmware, you wouldn't need to program in an RX group list as it just receives everything.

I'd tone the statement down a little and say " that makes the front panel feature as good as useless if you want to set up an entirely new digital channel" - as the radio itself is not useless

but essentially, that which you describe is my major beef with the fpp feature
