Motorola v Sepura

Post by 2E0YGG »

Wasn't too sure where to stick this one but:

What seems to be the better handset line to go for? Sepura SRH v Motorola MTH?

I'm considering dabbling in Tetra and would like to know people's views on what they think is the better handset to go for.

Motorola.... for software/ programming, sepura are a bit harder to prog and get software for,, also worth noting - without a dmo repeater they are as good as a set of 446 handies for range., motorola can be 'recovered' quite easily if fooked during progging too,

ideal starting setup 2x handies and 1x cm9000 or similar repeater.. without the repeater you WILL be disapointed..,

Dabble in DMR instead, it's cheaper and easier :)

I've already got quite a bit of DMR stuff :)

From the point of view of using the actual handset, which would you say is better? Build quality, audio quality, ease of use etc.

I tried both SRH3800's and MTH/MTP Moto's... Moto's were light and better to carry... the sepura's had a bit better RX audio also louder.., the sepura's latched on to the repeater easier from the edge of the repeaters coverage but i prefered the motorola radios, the cm9000 repeater is needed for any decent range , it can easily be ''adjusted'' via the service menu to put out 25-30w and will also forward messages ect, still the only issue is most tetra kit will only work 410-430 or 380-400 mhz so there is the licencing issues too... moto's can be opened slightly to cover into 70cms (grey area lol), but this also opens up problems with the radios factory tuning (receiver / transmitter alignment)....

...dmr is easier and cheaper without doubt and will work a lot better.

Does a DMO repeater just work on one frequency using different time slots for RX/TX or does it require two frequencies like a traditional repeater?

Can you not get 440-470 band tetra handsets?

There are two types of dmo repeater, one single freq (using time slots) and one with a split (1.5mhz to 10mhz), you can get different bands , 410-440 is rare tho.. most 'civil' are 400-430 and scarewave are 380-400.. the problem is buying a repeater for 380 400... cleartone will not supply one..

Cheers

Motorola used to be one of the best companies around for radio equipment although overpriced.
Now since 2011 when it was bought out the quality has dropped and seemed to be on the decline beforehand.
