PSR-295 and PMR446 incompatibility

All 446 frequencies are 12.5k (not 6.25 as many say) it all depends on your radio and where you start, so if you start on the correct freq and every 12.5 going up you will be right.

How do you get onto the correct frequency to start with if you don't have 6.25kHz steps?

what you say is only relevant on channelised radios where they stick to set channels displayed as freq not the case on most modern radios. So once you set a starting point and this can be any frequency if your radio has only 12.5 steps it is fine and every 12.5 going up fits perfectly.

So for example on my 897 i can set any freq from 100htz divisions eg. 446.00011 (made up freq) set it to 12.5 step the next freq at one click up would be displayed as 446.00136 etc etc.

I tried directly typing in the PMR channels since the dedicated PMR bank doesn't work but it just goes to the nearest 12.5khz step. But as noted above, the Grecom is a bit of a dead loss for PMR.

The PMR mode displays both channel number and frequency, and the frequency starts on the correct offset. But, as we have established, it's pants. The standard tuning mode for the 400mhz range is in 12.5khz steps. Given that the set is old and (according to the chap who gave it to me) cost £140, it's probably one of the cost compromises made in its design. And perhaps narrow band was not so common when it came on the market.

Just been slavering at the Uniden that does digital and trunk tracking (BCD396XT). The reviews say that it's good but a pig to program and get used to. Plus it's quite dear

Wouldn't be of any use if you are in the UK.

The 3500xlt and a copy of BCTool (plus cable) will serve you well. Very well.

Postscript to this subject: I dug the PSR295 out of the cupboard to use as my homebase (my Uniden 125 xlt is my out and about scanner) and went to the preset PMR446 band and realised that Grecom have programmed in 466.whatever - 20mhz away from the feckin' band!

Oh well.
