Coming in a bit late on this, and it's a rather expensive option, but the CommRadio CR1a is a very nice little radio. Although it will work with a whip on the back, it really needs a proper antenna. I've used an end fed wire with good results.

Ditto. Getting hard to find though, and the preselectors are like fairy dust.

I can recommend the Tecsun PL660 for a budget shortwave. I've pulled in hams from the US and all over Europe with the supplied 5m wire. Also mid-atlantic aircraft and SW stations from all over.

I see Maplin have these for £99.99, not sure if they're the 2014 version with autostore etc. May wait until January to see if the price comes down.

Grundig/Eton G5 is very sensitive. It has SSB but lacks a dedicated USB/LSB feature. I've had no issues tuning SSB via the BFO.

I have a high-end HF receiver that cost a fortune in the day, and it has a BFO rather than USB/LSB offsets, works for me.

If you have/get one and want to add a little computer control then checkout my HF150 Control Program and IF150 USB interface project.
