118mhz or 108mhz

Post by acl777 »

I've got an Icom 2730 and wanted to play around with airband. What am I missing though as the frequency coverage starts at 118mhz as opposed to 108. A quick Google indicated voice transmissions begin at 118mhz AM. That's fine as it's only voice transmissions I'm after but I noticed some airport ATIS frequencies fall into the 108mhz to 117mhz range.

So it misses the whole navigation section 108 to 117.975. The manual says the same claiming airband is "118.000 MHz to 136.99166 MHz" - you don't seem to be missing any settings, the radio just starts at 118 not 108.

Probably the only thing voice-wise you miss is the ATIS stuff - sometimes handy if you have the washing out and your local airport is indeed local!

Not much below 118 for Airband, so I wouldn't worry about it fella. :-)

Thanks. Is there an up to date website for ATIS frequencies only. I've googled around but can only find one from 2014. The others are all mixed . I have an interest in dxing ATIS transmissions from this country and the continent as they make for good VHF propagation beacons because they transmit 24/7 and from fixed location.

The bottom ten MHz 108-118 is for beacons. VOR beacons for nav - so nothing interesting down there at all, and if you do live near one, they're quite unpleasant to listen to.
