Heads Up - A380 flight marks 10 years of Emirates at Glasgow

Post by stu »

From BBC News:

The world's largest passenger plane is to make a one-off flight from Glasgow as Emirates airlines marks 10 years of operations from the city.

Emirates said a giant Airbus A380 would fly from Glasgow to Dubai on 10 April.

It will be the first time an A380, which stands more than 24 metres tall and has a wingspan of almost 80 metres, has taken off from a Scottish airport.

Amanda McMillan, from Glasgow airport, said it was a "significant milestone in our country's aviation history".

The Airbus A380 usually carries 525 passengers with seats in economy, business and first class, but can carry more than 850 passengers when flying with only economy seats.

Emirates UK vice president Laurie Berryman said: "As the largest A380 operator in the world, it is a historic moment to see one of our A380s take flight from Glasgow Airport for the first time."

Since Emirates began operations at Glasgow Airport on 10 April 2004, it has carried 2.3 million passengers.

It is a very impressive aircraft I'm just 2 miles as the crow flies from the end of runway 05 at Manchester Airport and depending on wind direction I'm either right under the approach or departure path and I get to see it once a day on its scheduled flight.

My pleasure moonstriker.

Im thinking about taking public transport through and going to the airport terminal. Does anyone know if there are any good viewing sites within walking distance of the terminal building?? Its been years since I was last through there.

If I were going I'd either park up on the layby on the Greenock road just over the Black Cart water or I'm pretty sure there's a few verges along the A726 Barnsford road to stop and get a closer look. :D Perhaps the Abbotsinch road too?

Cheers Strat. I reckon those areas are going to be v busy anyway - I remember when the A380 overflew EDI a few of years ago - it was gridlock all round the surrounding area so unless you get there in the middle of the night its going to be pointless. Im sure I read somewhere that you can view the a/c at the side of the terminal building so im looking to do that. Just dont want to make the effort to do the trip if theres no good viewing around the terminal.

Actually - Abbotsford Road by foot might also be an option. Have just checked street view and it lokos like you might well get a good view. Its also not too far from the terminal

No worries Stu! I usually hang around the Layby on the old A8 Greenock road, get them right overhead! You're probably on the money with all the pandemonium that will ensue with all fellow aviation fans trying to get a decent viewing space!! Talking of Aviation,I've posted up in an aviation site about Armed Forces Day,there's usually a flypast over the castle, had a look and no mention yet,I suspect it (Phoon) will fly past the castle en route to display in Stirling, have you heard any different? Cheers!
