Rm 203 input. Dilemma

Post by original45 »

The 203 as you guys have told me before is at its best driven low .
Am fm I input about 2 watt and its cool as cucumber.

My problem is ssb and my radio,it has no variable ssb controls and I'm told pushes 20 watts.Linc 1.

I would love to turn it down a bit but I'm told it hasn't been messed with internally so I'd rather not do so.

Yes the 203 are cheap if it pops but I respect all my belongings and everything gets v well look after never over exerted or heavily used.

Is 20 on ssb at the peak of its reliability and too much to input or will see it pop prematurely.

I prefer longevity

Oh God ,looks like I won't be running it on SSB then .

Why the Linc isn't variable for ssb when it is on am.fm is beyond me. Obviously a reason but would have been a benefit .

Turn down power on ssb with ALC PR, end of problem.

Ok, than he can add resistor attenuator to the amp. Simple job.
Circa 3dB att is needed https://a29.veron.nl/hams/pa1b/pa1b-pow ... alculator/
Which revision is that kl203?

Kl 203 is the blue fin black face with sky blue switches no pre amp.
I think it is the second variant ?.

Had it two years unused until now.

I can do minor solder jobs ,mics plugs, wiring but I'm not confident to make anything complicated.

Considering options , would reducing the ssb wattage via alc not also protect the lincs finals too ??.

And would a 15 watt into 203 be deemed acceptably low enough to provide longevity .

If it hadn't been messed with I'd just get it turned down as Chris says.
What to do .
Tut.

You can't go wrong with alc pot till you crank it all the way up. No harm can be done when you go from 25 to 12W.
Revision kl203 is printed on it's pcb, inside.

Ok Chris will look tomorrow. We're their any better model revisions ?,

I know most loose the pre amp quickly, that being those with and I have heard of many blow mosfets too, seems their quite fragile and best low Fed for sure.

Just different. I just wanted to look at your amp schematic to check how to add attenuator to it.

I'd be turning down the power output in the radio. It's the easiest and safest way. Save's you having to modify amplifiers input attenuator and the like.

Since you have said it hasn't been messed with, so long as you tweak the correct pot, you wouldn't be messing with it much, would you?
