Albrecht 5890/Magnum 257

Post by JibberJabber »

Are these basically the same radio or is one considered to be better than the other...?

I've heard a Magnum 257 on air and sounded Excellent.. Although I'm not sure which version it was.. Is the later version considered to be best..?

Cheers

Had a Magnum 257 and it was excellent. Not sure about the newer AE5890, seems to have been made to comply with EU Norms.

I think Nevada advertise it as being capable of 10m.. for Amateur use.. I just thought it was another take on the 485..?..

I think it can be upgraded in terms of power, and the extra digits on the frequency display would be useful. ;)

The 5890 as standard is a multi-norm 11m all mode. You can select the band to suit your country at power on.
However, inside the radio, behind the front panel, there are a series of jumpers. These can open up the radio to cover 24-30 or make it 10 + 12m only. You can set it so that the change is permanent or will reset back to default on a reset.

They are very good radios. Very versatile and sound great. It is certainly the best sounding "legal" radio I've owned.
The one drawback is there's no vfo mode so you are stuck, like the magnum or 485 to step in between the 10khz channel only. It's not free running.

Ok thanks for your input guys... I may give one a try.... The 5890 that is.. With the Magnum is the newer 'blue screen ' favoured over the orange display..?

Cheers

First thoughts... I find the tone a tad too high..Even with the low option selected..

I prefer my MK1 Optima .. Has a naturally deeper tone ..

I do like to be able to adjust the tone of a radio... I find the higher lighter sound quite fatiguing..

I didn't actually have a problem with the unlocked Clarifier on my 257 and I normally hate unlocked clarifiers.

The bits I didn't like were the wobbly controls and fact they were too close together.

Performance wise it was superb.

i could use it all fine but made it better when mobile,

i have no idea how they got them rubber boot type things that go over the controls to attract so much dust and fluff they are semi sticky lol.

yes simon the first one i had i went to tighten the loose controls and you cant they are just loose lol
