Grant, not seen this type before

Post by superstar »

Picked up this early grant off eBay, seems to work ok, not tried it on ssb yet though, just had to spray the volume and squelch with switch cleaner and tighten up the aerial socket, looks like a mini Adams type set up with how the speaker is, what do you think?

It looks lovely and clean inside and out, if there's no silly mods then probably one to keep as stock so future generations can see one that hasn't been buggered about with. Does 83 mean the year it was made?

Yeap . 1978 .

MK1 FCC Grant . 40ch AM/SSB . 858 chassis . They seem to come up quite often . I think there's both President and Uniden badged versions . There was a guy from Canada on this forum who had them all I think . Bit of a collector of Grants he was .

jeff66 wrote:President Electronics was a manufacturer of CB Radios and was bought by Uniden America. In the process of this buy out in America, some of the radios produced were cross breeds. These radios were labeled with the President name and had Uniden boards, or were labeled Uniden and had some of the accents of the President line.

Mine is a President Grant from the original line of President Radios. It housed a board that had a Relay for switching between TX and RX. It also used the 399 channel capable PLL labeled as the upD858. On the outside it has three push buttons on the front and is labeled President Grant. The mic jack, it is a 4 pin mic jack.

Then there was the President Grant from the transitional period of Uniden. It housed a board that had electronic switching for the TX and RX. It also had a 192 channel capable MB8719 PLL. This radio had a 5 pin mic jack. The obvious sign that it is a Uniden made radio is the 4 push buttons on the front.

Finally the radio labeled Uniden Grant, it is the same as the transitional President Grant, just labeled Uniden. It has the same Board, PLL, 4 Push Buttons and 5 Pin mic jack.

bigal68 wrote:Hi Sammy,

There were 3 SSB President radio's that had the second 858 chassis in them.

The first chassis no. was PC-176 which I believe was short lived and I think the only SSB radio with that in was a Courier.... a Spartan I think.... someone will put me right I'm sure....

The second SSB 858 chassis was the PC-196, and I'm pretty sure there were only 3 Presidents with this chassis... all known as the"early" versions.

They were the Grant (AM/SSB and only 3 buttons on the front instead of 4), the Washington (AM/SSB and only 2 buttons on the front instead of 3), and the Madison (AM/SSB and no AWI light and Vol and Squelch on the same knob).

The Adams came later, with chassis no. PC-346.... which I always thought was the last 858 SSB one, but I have a Stalker 202 base which has an 858 in it.... but is chassis no PC-353.

I've searched for a schematic for the Stalker without any luck, so if anyone has one I would really appreciate a copy. I have the Adams service manual, but I would like to know the difference between that and the Adams.

Unfortunately I dont think SAMS have one.... or at least I couldn't find it...

Apologies for the long-winded post.....
