What they both said .
Think this was done mainly for the Spanish market , who liked to connect up an external S meter while going out "cazerias del zorro"

Re: Is this standard or is it a mod ?
on the back of the other thread Re the Jackson i was doing a little investigating myself.
The early Silver 5 Band, 4 pin Mic Socket, A-E, Serial number plate over round (looks like sel-call hole) = no external S-meter
The early Black 5 Band, 4 pin Mic Socket, A-E, Serial Plate or Sticker over round hole = no external S-meter
Later Black ASC 6 Band, 6 pin Mic Socket, A-F, no serial plate or Sticker on back = Has S-meter
I don't much know about regional variations so that is clearly a consideration as Sammy says.
Here's a link showing the S-meter on the ASC http://radiopics.com/-%20PHP%20-/1.%20M ... Manual.php

I have had a couple of 5 banders with 6 pin mic socket. From France.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Re: Is this standard or is it a mod ?
Looks like regional variances and possibly the change in place of production Taiwan for the very early then while still keeping 5 Band a move to the Philippines where they eventually made the 6 Band but transitioned to it using 6 pin mics and adding the S-Meter to the 5 bander first.
