I often wonder if the biggest profits come from the very high value kit? A friend runs a music shop. Long ago, he made the decision to stick with pianos and organs and dump the band gear, especially guitars. Good decision because he has fewer customers, but all have their pensions and good amounts of cash in the bank, and want a hobby. So they spend ten grand on an organ they can't play. He then sells them a series of lessons. A year or two later they come in and trade in the organ for the latest one, and start again. I wonder if this is how ham radio really is - the cut throat internet price battle at the bottom. Put the 89.99 radio up to 94.99 and the customers desert you and buy from ebay. No money at that end, and under guarantee work eats your profit away even more. However, look at the price of the flagship radios - they probably make more from selling one of those, that they do on all the sub £100 equipment they sell in the week. You often see these second hand on the shelf, because the owner just bought the latest one. Same with HF antennas - the well off buy big and expensive, stick them on a tower. The cash savvy end compare the £35 white stick with the £30 chinese copy on ebay.

Have you looked how much a VHF or UHF Tonna antenna is now - mega money. The stuff at the bottom needs vast numbers of boxes to be shifted.

Old hams have much larger disposable income, so this is what W&S want. Business radio isn't the money spinner it was because it is now too cheap.

I hate the new name, but it's clearly a sensible evolution.

With the money they make they could buy brand new cardigans if they wanted.

They're a business, they've all done very well serving the markets they do, no reason for them to change to suit crusty old farts who'd sooner use a vintage Uniden anyway.

This is like the Land Rover enthusiasts who moaned about the Defender being axed. Only about 1 in 100 of them had ever bought a new Defender, so why should Land Rover care what they think?

Question for you all,
Have a guess how many new Icom IC-7300 radios were sold from the launch date (Mid March?) through to the end of November by Radioworld?
