recommend me a new antenna

Post by Ur5by9 »

I have a Sirio 827 on the mast at the moment.
It works well but I fancy a change, well it is part of the hobby of course.

I have been looking at a few antennas and now turn to the forum for advice and experience.

the short list but open to others opinions.
Super Preditor 500 by Hy-gain
Vortex Quasar Q82 a very expensive Vector 4000 ?
Vortex Quasar Q64 .64 wavelength

Any advice on my short list or other antennas I have have overlooked.

Not worth the effort imo for ground wave. For DX go for 5-7 element yagi.

Hi ch25 thanks for the comments , I have a 100ft wire doublet antenna for HF this is just for 11/10m vertical
Those Yagi antenna's take up a big foot print in the sky and may even extent passed my property lines.

I really couldn't dig another 1m cube hole to reset the mast, I still need to keep a happy wife.

Happy to listen and learn from experience.

Happy wife needs good banging as far as i know, but whatever suits yours :)
Mine not so long time ago was helping me erect 30m tower for 30/40m beam, but as wise man said: everyone have wife he deserved, isn't it?

Antron.

Ok ok...I was joking!!!!!!

Anything big that can take abuse from the wind if you live in an exposed area.
There have been several topics on this subject in the last couple of years, so maybe a quick search will give you a list of about 8 good possibilities.

This was why back then I went for the 827- looking for something different that might give better ground wave

The antron 99 would make a difference.

It would be worse.

I don't think you will find a vertical that will work noticeably better than the 827. Either get it up higher ot get a bigger linear.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Maybe an ali vertical antenna with 4 longer ground plane legs like the Super Penatrator 500 or others mentioned, will work better for you Ur5by9 than the 827.One of the locals 25 mile away swears the S.P.500 is better than his 827 up on his tower, and he has an original and a new mfj hy gain model aswell, both beat the 827 on groundwave, not by much upto 50 mile but upto 100+, the S.P.500 can hear what is in the noise with the 827,he also tried a S.G.M. that was quickly replaced, can only believe him eh.
Plenty are talking worldwide on 27.555 usb,
Some are too far up their own @rse to admit it,
Many happen to know otherwise dx-ing test free,
Showing a complete lack of respect for the law.

i had better results using 1/4 wavelength ground elements on verticals than 1/8 wavelength . but the difference isn't worth the cost of a sirio vector 4000 and it's weak construction . adding/upgrading to a beam would be the best bang for the buck .

I agree with Booty except I mod them lightly and the wind survival greatly increases.

Cut off 1/3 of the top TUBE and blitz the top ROD & ball altogether, top with a 3/8" (11mm?) solid aluminum rod about 75mm long and down-drilled to accept a shortened Wilson 5000 whip (or equivalent).

It dramatically lowers the end loading in wind plus eliminates the pathetically weak 1/8" solid aluminium top rod.
I don't deserve to be so humble

My Vector 4000 is amazing, only 3ft off floor pits every vertical I have had and believe me av had the lot!as for weak construction mine is spot on,my mates had his on his tower for years and never broke or anything unlike other verticals I have had. Each to there own,all I can say is iav gone from not hearing my mate to him now been a signal 9.i live in a terrible place for radio and like I said it’s 3ft off the floor covers in fake ivy to try hide it a bit from Parish Council.

People say they r bad quality the vector 4000,mine is solid it has fake ivy on the basket to try blend it in if I could load photos on here I would,or if someone lets me email them to them and they put them up?anyway I love this antenna and my mates is on his tower and has been for a few years and still in same shape it was new.I personally don’t like Antrons due to the one I got was faulty so I can’t comment on how good they r.They can’t b that bad amount of users of them.
