Quality of CB Radios compared to Ham Radios

Post by Trog »

I have read many times that Ham rigs are superior to CB rigs because they are made and built with better components. Does this mean every single component or just some components such as capacitors and/or transistors? I suppose what I'm really asking is why can't the 'inferior' components in a CB rig be replaced with better quality 'superior' components equal to those found in a Ham rig to make that CB rig perform as well as a Ham rig? Has anyone tried this or done it successfully? Would it be cost effective or just a waste of time and money - or even possible? Just throwing this out there really as it has crossed my mind from time to time. 8)

The actual components like individual capacitors and resistors are probably not a lot different. The quality and design of the circuits on Ham radios should be better, but it depends on how much they cost as to how much better.

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

If you look at the big manufacturers like Icom, Yaesu , Kenwood , some of the large radios produced are thousands of pounds. They use High quality filters and components. Its hard to make any comparison between a radio worth thousands and a 40 channel cb radio produced on a budget and also the audience it is aimed for.

Two different markets really....... 'Mass market, mass-produced" for the CB market, as they typical buyer has a lower income to spend on a new radio and/or their hobby generally. Full-on HAMs tend to be older, mostly retired or are well-heeled businessmen who have time/money on their hands to play radio. The radios will be sold in much lower numbers, but to people will to spend much more on them, so they are crafted in small numbers, to a high standard.

The Vauxhall/Bentley analogy works well. However, if you put the guts of a high end radio inside a CB chassis then you don't have an Audi..... YOU NEED YOUR HEAD EXAMINED! :-P
