Midland Precision Series Case Colour

Hi all,

I have a few of the older Midland Precision series radios that I am about to start refurbishing and I want to respray the cases.
Through the years, I've heard a few descriptions of the colour from mottled green through to duck egg blue.
The problem I have is that just about everyone of the radios I have is slightly different. I don't know if it's just the years being unkind or if there were subtle differences depending on the model and if they were European or US models.

Does anyone know what the colour actually is and does anyone recommend any particular brand of spray paint?

I've been and looked at my Precision series radio's, and I hadn't noticed that they are all a different colour!!

No idea what the colour is, but if you manage to find a suitable match, I would be interested to know what it is....

I did up a Midland years ago and the closest I got at the time was a good colour match, but it was only available in metallic. It was a 70's car colour though if I recall, possible a Vauxhall colour.

If you take the top case to a specialist car paint supplier, they'll make you a rattle can up that'll be within a shade of the one you have.

Talking of shade variations, I had a brand new Binatone 5star, just out of the box in about '83 that was more of a midnight blue colour, rather than the blackish colour of the usual ones.

One of my US Midland 6001s actually has more of a vinyl textured covering and is a much lighter colour, while my 7001 is way more green than blue.

All very confusing. I'll settle on one for them all (except the 6001 which is ok)

I believe certain Halfords stores can mix the paint if you know a code, but not sure if they'll want to start messing with trying to match it though. Best go for the specialist type to be safe.

I used to use a place in Stirchley in Birmingham when I lived there, but I'm not sure where you're based.

Use good old Google to find your nearest shop/factory unit.

Slightly off topic but u recently had radio cases powder coated black and they looked very nice and the finish was hard wearing.

If they are all a different colour then choose one which looks about correct and just say it has always been that colour. What you might find hard is matching the original spit finish.

Apologies. I thought I had mentioned what I had done but after reading the thread, I obviously hadn't bothered my ar*e!

Eventually settled for Duck Egg Blue from Wilko.
I've checked my order and it was bar code 4661733.
It's advertised as gloss but I didn't find it too bad. I couldn't find a matt finish.

I rubbed down the cases and applied two coats + two coats of matt clear lacquer that I already had from rust-oleum.

Both the 2001 & 4001 got the treatment.

Sorry John. Sold all bar one of my Precisions to a Midland collector late 2018 and pretty sure I don't have any images of the finished articles.

Having 13 precision series sets ( yes 13!)

I was wondering about getting my local powder coatings man to perhaps do them all in one batch.. if he can match up the colour anything near...

Would the powder coat finish look ok do you think? Especially on the speaker vents etc ?
