New CB purchase troubleshooting - East Yorks

Post by jacobws99 »

Hi all,

First of all I live in East Yorkshire between Brough and Market Weighton if anyone is from around there :D

I have recently purchased a Midland Alan 78 Plus CB for my car (perhaps a bit big, I know) and have attached it to a moonraker antenna and magmount.

I'm having some trouble adjusting the antenna (I physically cannot get it to unscrew) as it is too short according to my SWR readings, but having called moonraker I was advised that extending the coaxial cable length by 1m with a barrel plug would do the job. Has anyone had any success with this?

Another thing I thought is that there might not be a good enough ground connection between the car and the radio, might this be the case?

Also, I'm having some concerns with my audio transmission. The power readout on the screen is always at full, but I can't figure out whether this means the mic is too sensitive or whether I am simply transmitting at full power. I've not yet had chance to speak to anyone else, but I've a very old handheld CB locked to channel 20, and when I've had that hooked up you can barely hear a thing as its very distorted, which was much unlike my TTI CB 560, which you could have a proper conversation with.

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to get up and running but its quite difficult with no one else to test with!

Jacob.

Can I ask how big the moonraker antenna is?

Have you managed to get this sorted? If not I am in Driffield, have an antenna analyser, spare antennas, mounts, coax, plugs etc so we could check it all out and see what is going on.
