Right a bit of a head scratcher with this one, i recently bought an rci 2950dx off the bay which came without the expansion chip so went ahead and ordered one from the states..
Arrived yesterday installed as per instructions and the damned thing is still on 10 and 12 meters as it was when i got it so no 24-30mhz coverage..
Any ideas what could be the problem pls

I have no idea, but on most HF sets that I've expanded they generally require a CPU reset or factory reset after ?????

Probably best to wait for someone who knows to come along.

theres a jumper you have to swap over behind the front fascia

The radio must have the module connected to RX/TX from 32.000 - 24.000 MHz.

Open radio on the speaker side.

Face the back of the radio towards you so the front panel is away from you.

Looking where the module is plugged in on the back side of the front panel there will be 2 sets of pins right above the module plug in.

Connect the 2 right pins together.

Reassemble the radio and turn radio on.

The radio should start at 21.000MHz.

Yep your correct mate there is four pins above where the e-chip plugs into altho was unsure what these are for..
To be honest im no radio tech and anything other than plug and play its outta my capabilities although dont sound too difficult altho id rather not take a soldering iron to it incase i damage something else..
So your saying the top and bottom right hand side pins as you look at the board?
If i can somehow clip a jump wire over the two pins id give it a shot see how we go

Just had an update on this from the guy in the states who i bought the echip off..
Aparantly my radio 14b chassis was made hardwired for only 10 and 12 meter oporation and was specifically made for the uk market so will not expand even with the chip altho the socket is there to accept the chip which is confusing..
I just spoke also to steve at cobraworkxshopz who said it will work with a software upgrade and the echip so a bit confusing at the minute

i will chime in as i prob sold this above radio

i bought this with the seller telling me the radio will only work in 10m and 12m but it used to be fine on 11m but it suddenly stopped working on 11m(was bought out side the uk but in europe) cant confirm this or deny it

steps i took and results
removed echip and re flowed all the board refitted no change
tried echip in a different radio no change would not expand his radio
wasn't able to try a different echip as dint have one
tried the jumpers a with different combos as posted on the next went into 18 mhz,21mhz,14mhz,50mhz fine no issues

so came to the conclusion a faulty echip so told my m8 to bin the chip
i have sold a stupid amount of radios this year about 1k on ebay and easy 2k from facebook and no time to sort issues out
ive sent some radios to nick as i dont have time to repair everything and run a business 6-7 days and the radio stuff my hobby has exploded cant get stuff out fast enough.

so this radio in question i either got a chip and waited or ebayed it for a quick flip
it went on ebay with the following listing as i could only test 10m and 12m

"Nice clean ranger fully working covering 10m and 12m

This does not cover 11m an optional echip will be needed (easy to get on eBay)

Has few small marks on face case is nice and clean

All the extras with it

Been told this is a v3 no idea check version and serial if in any doubt before you buy"

NOW I KNOW NONE OF THE ABOVE helps you at all but i am one of the most honest people on this earth
and IF YOU feel you been miss led by me send it back to me and i give your money back.

notes..
i did give the board number and serial in case any doubt about anything it could be checked before was bought
i bought this outside the uk but it may well be a uk version that got sold on to europe (never knew they did a uk version)
i sold this of cheap as a 10m 12m radio
i know you never said a bad word about the seller "igfybo" me nor am i defending my self
just giving you the full picture and to let you know i stand by everything i sell

Hmm i dont recall saying the seller was actually dishonest in any of the above posts infact the radio was as described and infact looked better than in the actauall listing..
The confusion comes from the fact that i bought the chip off a seller in the states i fitted the chip which did not work so the seller asked me for the chassis number which when he spoke to ranger they confirmed this particular chassis was made for the uk market and was distributed by truck king who are no longer trading and as he put it the radio was hard wired for only 10/12 meters and could not be expanded even with the chip..he actually offered a full refund for the chip even tho it was not at fault..
I also spoke to steve at cobraworxshopz who advised that this 14b chassis could actually be expanded with the chip and a software configuration which will obviously cost to have done..
I therefore decided to relist this back on ebay as steve said id have a good chance of selling it as a 10/12 meter unit as these are aparantly quite desireable especially in the states and canada..
Soooo its back on the bay and if sold will bring me enough cash to buy another similar radio..
The choice is either spend money on this or cut loose and buy something else simple as that and i chose the latter and did not at any point have a dig at anyone for anything regarding this

So , the outcome of the story is don't buy a 14b 2950DX .

Seems crazy in today's market that Ranger would produce a chassis that can't be modded .
