They do seem to suffer issues with the channel change buttons.

Maybe someone has had the front off to fix something like that?

IIRC there is a very thin flexible PCB behind the front panel, and to get the front off you need to de-solder the microphone socket from this thin PCB.

Maybe this thin PCB carries connections that have become damaged?

These days I am sure the radio could be converted to have a Blue LED display, but it wouldn't be right would it...

Three if you include the other one that has just appeared on the bay.

The one on there now has a failed segment on the "LED" display.

Well if it was an LED it would be an easy fix, but it isn't so it probably won't be...

It's pretty unusual to lose a single segment on a VFD, in fact I've never seen one fail. It's more likely to be a bad connection or a driver that's causing the problem.
That's handy to know as one of mine is out...... My mic doesn't change up or down either  On the plus side it has had little use and comes in original box with original bill of sale.
I'll pay whatever i think it's worth...:-)

I can't, from a quick google, find a schematic for it but the block diagram in the owner's manual would make me thing that a missing segment and up/down not working could be related.

Hehehe, just found a schematic for the Magpie.

It was *way* ahead of its time.

Uses one of those cheap arse dodgy MOSFET outputs...

Looks knocked around from where i am sat, £104 for a 40 channel CB, Nah i'll pass.

I have never owned one but a friend bought two new when they first came out and owned them right up until he sold them about 2yrs ago [Both still pristine and boxed], I only had a go of one of them a handful of times and it never did anything for me and wasn't at all impressed.

Beautiful piece of vintage technology! Shame they went for such an oddball display that doesn't have the lifespan of LEDs.

^^^ Agreed. It's British, it "scans", has classy front panel, blue display, sensitive rx = I like them :)

That one looks pretty good to me, many of them have worn front decals and dodgy displays by now.

Another one = http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Magpie-Auto-S ... 1450725822?

More sensible price on that one, and it looks in good(ish) nick.
