Re: Smelly radios
Place radio / any other smoke smelling item into a cupboard / box / large stack and store (you get the idea) With a bowl which is 1/2 full of white vinegar, with a folded up towel placed in the bowl with the vinegar.
2 days to a week later, remove radio from the enclosure and it will absolutely reek of vinegar.
another 2 days to a week later, the smell of vinegar and the smell of smoke will have gone.
It's an old car interior trick that works for owt smokey.

Re: Smelly radios
I have this issue with a lot of my dads stuff I inherited. As daft as it sounds, a lot of the smell comes from inside. Take the case off, blast it with an air duster and brush and leave it to "air"
Good clean on the outside and it should start to honk less.

Re: Smelly radios
I put my cases through a hot dishwasher cycle and they came out smelling of roses, I suspect the issue is that the fag smell has embedded into the PCB.

If you ever pick up a stinking rig Sam, bring it over and put it behind Spud, much stronger than what ever you'd get out of a can!

The worst I ever had was one of those Fidelity Homebase things I picked up in Burnthouse Lane in 1983 - it was humming!
I had sold a York JCB 863 to own tha piece of junk...

Re: Smelly radios
So far i have tried
Isopropyl alcohol
Fairly liquid and scrubbing brush
Washing detergent and scrubbing brush
Maplins electronic cleaning solvent
Poundland alloy wheel cleaner foam and scrubbing brush
Autoglym bumper care black plastic restorer
Simoniz black plastic restorer
and still it smells nearly as bad as it did to begin with.
I think the radio will end up on ebay at the weekend.
Unless someone here who smokes a pipe would like to buy a President George?

There is no such thing as a Fidelity 1000 which is too good to scrap.

Re: Smelly radios
Friend of mine picked up with a load of other gear an older large frequency counter that had Nixi bulbs for the display, inside you could not see the colours on the resisters, diodes, IC's or any of the other components as everything had a thick brown coating of nicotine on it, never seen anything that bad.

Re: Smelly radios
It certainly isn't that bad. It looks absolutely fine and is in pretty good condition.

I use this stuff http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/servisol-anti ... 00ml-jp18u
Spray it all over the radio and watch the dirt and grease bubble off. Very good!

Re: Smelly radios
i don't think it would hurt - I've used it on a cloth to wipe the chassis of rigs and inside of panels but im not sure if you could apply direct to the PCB - It might say on the can but I've ran out currently.
